Teddy Bear Hospital at MTU - Taking the fear out of hospital visits and introducing children to the world of healthcare
On Saturday 22nd November, MTU will once again welcome children and their teddy bears to the North Campus in Tralee for the much-loved Teddy Bear Hospital. Organised by staff and students from the International Medical Commencement Programme (IMCP), along with volunteers from MTU’s Nursing, Pharmacy Technician, Health, Sport & Exercise Sciences, and Early Childhood Education and Care courses, the event promises a fun-filled day of play, learning, and laughter, all in aid of a great cause.
The Teddy Bear Hospital gives children the chance to bring their favourite cuddly toy for a special “check-up,” helping them learn about hospitals and healthcare in a relaxed and supportive way. From triage to x-ray, blood analysis to surgery, children and their teddies will experience the full hospital journey across 14 interactive stations. There will also be a pharmacy station, handwashing, dental care, storytelling, nutrition, and exercise activities. New this year, a teddy repair facility will be on hand for any bears in need of a few stitches, an ear replacement, or other minor fixes.
The aim of the Teddy Bear Hospital is to reduce fear of hospitals and medical procedures, while showing children what doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals do as part of their jobs. Through role play and imagination, children will discover that healthcare is about care, kindness, and helping people feel better.
This year’s charity partner is the Cashel Ward at University Hospital Kerry, with all proceeds supporting paediatric inpatient care.
The Teddy Bear Hospital will run from 10am to 4pm with two sessions:
- Morning session: 10am to 12 noon
- Afternoon session: 2pm to 4pm
Tickets cost €5 per child, with all funds going directly to paediatric care at UHK. Only children require tickets - accompanying adults do not need to register.
