In-person ArTA Introduction Training
January 4 & 5, 2027

In this course, Dr. Ingrid Pénzes will give an introduction to the ArTA method using a mix of experiential work and theory.

ArTA is an evidence-based, art-focused and neuro-informed art therapy assessment method. This method assists art therapists in observing adult clients' art making and art products in a focused, systematic and efficient manner, and to interpret these observations in terms of balance and adaptability as key aspects of mental health. These insights help the art therapist to assess whether the client might benefit from art therapy and, if so, to formulate treatment goals and provide art therapy interventions tailored to the client's needs and abilities. ArTA can also be used to monitor and evaluate treatment progress.

ArTA is based on doctoral research with adult clients with a wide range of problems. It is enriched by art therapy brain research. The concepts of balance and adaptability can be explained from a neuroscientific perspective and transcend different diagnoses and populations.

The use of ArTA with 12- to 15-year-olds will be covered during the training. ArTA has been primarily developed for adults aged 18 and over. Recent research indicates that it is applicable to adolescents from the age of 16. For children aged 12 and above, an additional component is required that takes developmental stages and domains into account. For children under 12, ArTA is currently not suitable.

Objectives:

After successful completion of this training the participant understands the theory of the ArTA method. The participant:

1.Knows the ArTA concepts and their interrelatedness
Material interaction
Material experience
Formal elements determining the structure and variation of the art product
Balance
Adaptability
2. Is able to recognize the ArTA concepts in a case study that is provided
a.Is familiar with the four steps of ArTA: observing, analysing, interpreting and formulating
b.Knows how to use the ArTA Observation Form
3. Has a basic understanding of the theory of ArTA from a neuroscientific perspective
4. Understands how the ArTA assessment is the basis for all further decisions during the different phases of a treatment process (clinical reasoning)
5. Can use the ArTA mixing panel to enhance the systematic application of materials, techniques and instructions in the art therapy process.

For whom:
This training is intended for art therapists working with individuals aged 12 years and above who wish to become acquainted with the ArTA method for art therapy assessment. It serves as an introduction.

To apply the method in professional practice, ArTA Basic Certification is required. For participants who are interested in obtaining this certification, an additional learning pathway is available, consisting of three online sessions. During these sessions, participants are guided in applying ArTA in their own clinical practice in a supportive setting.
At the end of the pathway, participants submit a completed ArTA Observation Form. If this demonstrates sufficient understanding of the method, the ArTA Basic Certificate is awarded, enabling the use of ArTA in professional practice. Additional cost: €215.
